Jagannath Puri Temple Facts: Every year Jagannath Rath Yatra starts from the second date of Shukla Paksha in the month of Ashadha. And on the 11th day, this journey ends with the return of Jagannath ji. The Jagannath Rath Yatra is starting on 20 June this year. Some rituals are followed even before the commencement of the Rath Yatra, which starts from the full moon date of Jyestha month. On this day Lord Jagannath, sister Subhadra, and elder brother Balram were bathed in the Jagannath temple. Traditionally after the bath the three deities are considered ill and are kept in seclusion to recover under the care of a Raj Vaidya. During this, they are offered decoction, etc. It is a belief that they get cured in 15 days by Ayurvedic medicine given by Raj Vaidya. After this, the Rath Yatra started. Let's know about this unique tradition...

Why is the tradition of Jagannath ji being sick followed?
Jagannath ji, Balabhadra ji, and Subhadra ji are bathed with 108 pitchers of water on the full moon date of Jyestha month. This bath is known as the Sahastradhara bath. It is believed that Jagannath ji, Balabhadra ji, and Subhadra ji all three falls ill after bathing in 108 pitchers of cold water. That's why they are kept in seclusion. As long as all three of them remain in seclusion, the doors of the temple do not open.

This is how devotees visit God for 15 days
When Lord Jagannath's elder brother Balarama and younger sister Subhadra stay in seclusion for 15 days after bathing and falling ill, devotees are unable to visit them during this period. In such a situation, at this time his image is shown for the darshan of the devotees. While all three come out after recovery, a grand procession is taken out. People from every corner of the country reach this Rath Yatra.

This is how treatment happens
They are treated in isolation for 15 days in the same way as the common people are treated. Ayurvedic herbs and decoctions are offered to the Lord. After recovering completely, Jagannath ji gives darshan to the devotees and after this, a grand Rath Yatra is taken out.
