SPF is the first thing to look for when buying sunscreen, but have you ever wondered what it means and why different skin types need different SPF. Along with this, there are many other things written on the label of sunscreen. Many times we buy sunscreen without understanding them, but in reality, it is also very important to know its meaning.

The things written on the label of sunscreen tell how the sunscreen will react on your skin. However, it is not easy to understand such complex terms.

Mumbai's renowned dermatologist Dr Rashmi Shetty, owner of Ra Aesthetics & Dermatology, has shared some tips related to this on Instagram. She has told us how we should look at sunscreen.

What is the meaning of the SPF number?

Its full form is Sun Protection Factor. You must have seen that sunscreen is always seen from the SPF number only. According to Dr Rashmi, an SPF means you are protected from the sun's rays for 10 minutes. Now 30 or 50 means 50*10 i.e. you are protected for 500 minutes or 8 hours. But there is also a loose point here. SPF works only until the skin absorbs it or it is not removed from the body for some reason. Sweat, pollution, dirt, sunlight, and skin texture, depend on many factors. This is the reason why most dermatologists recommend that you reapply sunscreen every two hours if you are going out in the sun.

What is the meaning of TPA?

TPA is Top Protection Grade for UAVs. You may have noticed that sunscreens have a symbol like PA++++ or a star (*). It simply means how protected you are from the sun in terms of UVA protection. 4 stars or 4 plus is very good for you.

What is the base ingredient?

What kind of additional ingredients are there in sunscreen? Like aloe vera which gives coolness to the skin, glycerin or water-based content, Vitamin-C etc. for dry skin. These ingredients act differently and you have to choose to see which kind of ingredient suits your skin.

Nowadays, ingredients like Hyaluronic Acid and Niacinamide are also included in sunscreens which can give you additional skin care.

When should you apply sunscreen?

The answer is simple. You always have to use sunscreen. Whether it is cloudy in the sky or it is very cold, you have to apply sunscreen. Weather does not affect sun damage and skin always needs protection.

There are many sunscreen brands available in the market, but you can either do a patch test or consult a doctor to find out what suits your skin.

Dry skin and oily skin

Generally, dry-skinned people should choose cream-based sunscreen which has maximum moisturizing ingredients. This is where people with oily skin should use gel-based sunscreen. This is also good for acne-prone skin so that too much buildup does not settle in the skin.

If the sunscreen is not absorbed properly into your skin, then it will not be effective. Therefore, choose it according to the skin type.
