Who doesn't like to enjoy ice cream in the summer season? Be it children or adults, everyone enjoys this delicious dessert. However, nowadays people pay more attention to their fitness, due to which they do not eat ice cream. They believe that ice cream is not good for health because it is too sweet and fatty. But does eating ice cream have a bad effect on health? Some dieticians gave their opinion regarding this.
According to HuffPost news, dietitian Tamar Samuels avoids calling any food or the quantity of it as 'good' or 'bad'. He says that doing this can create a wrong relationship with food. At the same time, the nutritional needs of every person are different. Another dietitian, Maggie Michalczyk, also has a similar view. He says that ice cream is a food with fewer nutrients, but it can be eaten in balanced quantity.
It is important to read the label of ice cream.
There are many types of ice cream available in the market, in which the nutritional level also varies. That's why it's important to read labels. For example, a 2/3 cup serving of vanilla bean ice cream contains 32 grams of sugar and 13 grams of saturated fat. The American Heart Association (AHA) recommends eating no more than 36 grams of sugar daily for men and 25 grams for women. Whereas for saturated fat, AHA recommends not taking more than 13 grams in a diet of two thousand calories. That means just one scoop of ice cream can fulfill the entire day's sugar and saturated fat intake.
It is also not a good idea to give up ice cream completely.
Dietician Edwina Clark says that even though ice cream is high in saturated fat and sugar, it can still be a daily part of a healthy diet. It also has some health benefits. She says that eating one scoop of ice cream every night will not cause any harm to your health. Ice cream is a good source of calcium, magnesium, and vitamin B12 and often brings joy and nostalgia, which are important functions of eating.
Good source of Vitamin A:
Samuels says that milk and cream are a good source of Vitamin A, which is an essential nutrient for eye health and strengthening the immune system. She says that these dairy products also provide choline, which plays an important role in early brain development and metabolism. Due to the high-fat content of ice cream, it can also provide more satiety than other sweets, which contain mostly sugar and refined.
Pay attention to the size of the ice cream.
All three dietitians emphasize that if you are going to eat ice cream every day, then the most important thing is that you keep an eye on its quantity. Clark says that for most people, a maximum of one serving a day (which is often half a cup) is enough. Although there may be some situations where higher amounts may be beneficial, it is also important to look at your overall diet. If you are eating too much sugar throughout the day, then do not include ice cream in your diet.
