Cocoa Drink For Good Cholesterol: We take various measures to reduce bad cholesterol and increase good cholesterol in the body, but have you ever tried cocoa drink? According to the report of Japanese researchers, drinking cocoa every day can increase the level of HDL (good cholesterol). These researchers included Kazuo Kondo, MD, Ph.D., of Ochanomizu University in Tokyo, who studied 25 healthy Japanese men with normal or mildly high cholesterol levels.

The research took into account

None of these men were taking prescription drugs, antioxidants, or vitamin supplements. Looking at their average BMI (Body Mass Index), they were not overweight, and they didn't drink a lot. First, the researchers examined the participants' blood and urine samples and divided them into two groups.

The test lasted about 12 weeks

One group was fixed to drink sugar-rich cocoa every day for 12 weeks. For comparison, men in the second group were asked to drink a sweetened beverage without cocoa for 12 weeks. But this was no ordinary cocoa that the first group drank. The researchers bought the cocoa beans themselves, roasted and kept them in their lab. They also analyzed the cocoa powder to make sure it didn't lose large amounts of antioxidants during processing. At the end of the 12-week experiment, the participants gave more blood and urine samples.

Benefits of drinking cocoa drinks

Men in the cocoa group showed a 24% increase in their HDL levels. HDL levels also increased for the second group but to a lesser extent. The researchers also tested the men's LDL or cholesterol. Lab tests showed that the LDL cholesterol of men who consumed cocoa daily for 12 weeks was more resistant to oxidation than the LDL cholesterol of men who did not drink cocoa. Tests revealed that antioxidants called polyphenols are found in cocoa, which helps in reducing bad cholesterol.
