The role of women in Mahatma Gandhi's life and the Indian freedom struggle was extremely important. Gandhiji believed that women are an important part of society and their cooperation could prove to be decisive in India's independence. He inspired women to participate in public life and be a part of the freedom struggle. By involving women in the movement, Gandhiji paved the way for a new social revolution, where women also got equal rights as men.
Many women walked hand in hand with Mahatma Gandhi in the freedom movement. During the freedom struggle, many women made unique contributions under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi. Some of these prominent women were-
Kasturba Gandhi
Kasturba Gandhi, wife of Mahatma Gandhi, walked hand in hand with Gandhiji in the freedom struggle. She not only supported Gandhiji's actions but was also active in the freedom movements herself. Kasturba's role was important in the Satyagraha and Non-Cooperation Movement. If Gandhiji is called Bapu, then Kasturba Gandhi was also Ba for the countrymen.
Apart from Gandhiji's wife, these five women supported Bapu in the freedom movement and helped in taking his movement forward.
Sarojini Naidu
Sarojini Naidu, known as 'Nightingale of India', was a prominent woman leader of the freedom struggle. She played an active role in the Salt Satyagraha and various movements started by Gandhiji. She was a close associate of Gandhiji and became the first woman president of the Indian National Congress.
Kamala Devi Chattopadhyay
Kamala Devi Chattopadhyay played an important role in women's empowerment and social reform. Under the leadership of Gandhiji, she joined the movements of the freedom struggle and took forward the Khadi and Swadeshi movement.
Aruna Asaf Ali
Aruna Asaf Ali inspired the youth of India during the Quit India Movement. She is known for her active role in the "Quit India Movement". She was a strong supporter of Gandhiji's policies and ideology.
Mira Ben
Mira Ben is a foreign woman who was very inspired by Mahatma Gandhi and left her home and came to India. She worked with Gandhiji in many important aspects of the freedom struggle, such as the Khadi Satyagraha and the Bardoli Satyagraha.
Dr. Sushila Nayyar
Dr. Sushila Nayyar, sister of Mahatma Gandhi's secretary Pyarelal Punjabi, was impressed by Gandhiji. After completing her medical studies, Sushila became Gandhiji's personal doctor. During the Quit India Movement, Sushila was arrested in Mumbai along with Kasturba Gandhi.
