Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in women globally, causing millions of deaths every year. In India too, its rapidly increasing cases are being seen in the last decade. Health experts say, lifestyle disturbances along with genetic risks are the main reasons for the development of this cancer, about which every woman needs to be careful from an early age. Breast cancer is on the rise in both rural and urban India.
Researchers found that you can reduce the risk of breast cancer to a great extent by maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Some research suggests that if the amount of fiber-rich things in the diet is increased, then its risk can be reduced by about 40 percent.
A fiber diet lowers the risk
Researchers found that a diet high in fiber may reduce the risk of prostate cancer in men and breast cancer in women. This can be easily accomplished with whole grains, vegetables, fruits, and beans. According to some studies, women who consume diets rich in these foods have a lower risk of breast cancer.
A diet rich in fiber can also help your health in many other ways, such as reducing the risk of diabetes and heart disease.
What did the study find?
The findings of a study published in the journal Pediatrics suggest that including plenty of fiber-rich foods in the diet during puberty can significantly reduce the risk of developing breast cancer. This long-term study of 44,000 women found that high school girls who had a higher dietary fiber intake had a lower risk of breast cancer in the future than other women.
May reduce the lifetime risk of breast cancer
The study concluded that researchers found that women whose diets contained up to 28 grams per day, on average, had a 24 percent lower risk of developing breast cancer before menopause. And among women who had the highest fiber intake (14 grams per day, on average), 45 percent had symptoms of this cancer by age 50.
The findings suggest that following a high-fiber diet may also reduce the lifetime risk of breast cancer in women by 16 percent. This one remedy can be very effective in preventing this growing cancer.
What do researchers say?
Maryam Farvid, lead author of the study, says, "Our study confirms that lifestyle factors can increase the risk of breast cancer. At the same time, lifestyle improvements can also reduce the risk. Increasing the risk is not enough, women also have to stay away from smoking and alcohol, due to which the risk is also seen to increase significantly.
