Bleeding during the first trimester

Any pregnancy is divided into three trimesters and each trimester has different causes and treatments for problems. The chance of bleeding in the first trimester or 12 weeks of pregnancy is between 15% and 20%. This means that two out of 10 pregnant women may experience bleeding in the first trimester. In this case, the chances of miscarriage are 10% to 15%.

If bleeding occurs in the first 14 days, the miscarriage rate is between 45% and 55%. Abdominal cramps accompanied by heavy bleeding can be an early sign of miscarriage.

Bleeding during the second and third trimesters

In the second and third trimesters, a woman may experience bleeding due to problems in the cervix. In such a situation, the bag of water bursts and after that blood comes.

Vasa Previa

Vasa previa is a dangerous condition in which blood vessels cross the opening of the birth canal. This can be dangerous for the child. That's why you should go to the doctor immediately.

Placenta Previa

This is a condition in which the placenta attaches to the lower part of the uterus. It partially or completely covers the birth canal. In such cases, the pregnant woman may bleed without any pain. For this, you should go to the doctor immediately.

Abruptio placenta

In about 1% of pregnancies, the placenta separates before labour begins. This can lead to heavy bleeding, which can be dangerous for both the mother and the baby.

Labour

Bleeding at the end of pregnancy can be a sign of labour. This is a sign that your baby is ready to come into this world.

Molar pregnancy

However, a molar pregnancy is very rare. But, this happens when the tissue inside the uterus develops instead of the baby. In such cases, the woman experiences pregnancy-like symptoms, which include vomiting, severe nausea, and rapid enlargement of the uterus. In such cases, the tissue has to be removed.

Ectopic pregnancy

An ectopic pregnancy occurs when the fetus develops outside the uterus (most commonly in the fallopian tubes). Its probability is about 2%. In such cases, the woman may experience mild headaches, syncopal attacks and severe abdominal cramps.

Other reason

Sometimes, a woman may experience bleeding during implantation. It can last for about 10-14 days. Other causes of bleeding during pregnancy include polyps in the cervix, cervical or vaginal infection, cancer, polyps, and cervical changes during the gestation period.

Some causes of bleeding are harmless, while others can be dangerous. In any case, bleeding during pregnancy should not be ignored. It is best to rule out any problems and visit a gynaecologist immediately if required.
