A six-foot-tall bronze statue of Arun Jaitley will be installed on 28th December on his 68th birth anniversary inside the Arun Jaitley Stadium at the Feroz Shah Kotla ground. The construction of the statue has come at a cost of about 15 lakh rupees and its weight is about 800 kg. Sources said that one and a half lakh rupees have been spent on the statue's umbrella.
Jaitley was the President of the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) for 14 years from 1999 to 2013 and now his son Rohan Jaitley is holding the post.
Home minister Amit Shah may unveil the statue at around 1 pm on Monday, with Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri and Anurag Thakur, Cricket Board President Sourav Ganguly, and Secretary Jai Shah along with Arun Jaitley's family, a source told IANS. And former India and Delhi captains Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir will also be present on the occasion.
At this time, due to the Kovid-19 epidemic, only 50 people will be present at the ceremony. Others who will be present may include Sports Minister Kiran Rijiju, 18 DDCA directors - and possibly a few more than all of them.
An eyewitness said, Jaitley's statue arrived at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Saturday afternoon and a protective shield was made around it immediately.
Former India and Delhi captain Bishan Singh Bedi, however, has strongly opposed the installation of Jaitley's statue in the stadium. He says that a statue of a great player should be installed.
The decision to install the statue of Arun Jaitley was taken soon after Rohan Jaitley, the new treasurer, and four other directors were elected at the DDCA Apex Council meeting in October. The statue will be installed in the parking area near Virender Sehwag Gate (Gate No-1) of the stadium.
The historic site was built in 1883 and was called Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium until September 12 last year, when it was renamed Arun Jaitley Stadium. Former Union Finance Minister Jaitley died on 24 August last year.
